Drone Design

A Form Exploration of Retro-Futurism

GONTC is a drone concept that seamlessly blends retro steampunk aesthetics with futuristic electronic design, catering to Gen Z’s growing appreciation for nostalgic yet unique product trends. This project highlights my expertise in form development, sketching, 3D modeling, and product visualization.

Nostalgia Obsession: Designing for Gen Z

There is a growing fascination among Gen Z with vintage aesthetics, driven by a desire for individuality and nostalgia. However, contemporary drone designs often prioritize minimalistic and sleek aesthetics, failing to resonate with this unique preference. Recognizing this gap, we explored how modern drone design could integrate vintage, retro, and steampunk influences to create a distinct product.

Through extensive form exploration and 3D iteration in Rhino, we refined our design to strike a balance between aesthetics and functionality. Our goal was to incorporate signature steampunk elements—exposed mechanical components, intricate piping and wiring, decorative features, and metallic finishes—into a contemporary drone design. Over multiple iterations, we distilled the elaborate and ornate design into a more focused and cohesive form.

Gear-Core Lighting Effect

We intentionally incorporated lighting effects to enhance the fusion of retro and futuristic aesthetics. The central core features an illuminated effect that activates upon startup, drawing attention to the exposed mechanical details beneath a transparent shell.

Vintage-Inspired Camera Lens

The drone’s camera design takes inspiration from classic film cameras, aligning with Gen Z’s love for retro photography.

Blade-Free Propulsion System

To maintain a smooth and streamlined form, we adopted a bladeless propulsion system, leveraging a rotating axis for improved balance and stability.

I also placed significant emphasis on post-production, ensuring high-quality visual presentation. From Rhino modeling to KeyShot rendering and Photoshop processing, I meticulously refined each detail to achieve hyper-realistic and engaging visuals that effectively communicate the concept’s aesthetic and functional intent.
